How does a love of music influence careers in both law and real estate? Sang Min Lim, founder of Sang Min Lim Law Firm & Real Estate (currently associated with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices and Keller Williams Realty), whose Korean and Chinese names are 임상민 and 林相旻, respectively, has always been active in all three.
He has always had a love of music – one that stayed active even while keeping up with undergraduate studies at an Ivy League school and throughout his graduate studies in law.
However, when he introduced his debut K-Pop song and video in 2019, he had no idea how the experience would impact his business, Sang Min Lim Law Firm and Sang Min Lim Real Estate.
The more he traveled, the more empathy he gained for those who needed to fit into a culture that was significantly different from their own stating, “I learned a lot about how hard it can be to step into a culture that isn’t yours and try to figure out what to do and how to live in a way that will help you build a good life.”
It was a lesson that the South Korean native also understood from his own experiences as a student in the United States. Those experiences drove him to think differently about what his clients needed to feel secure in their transactions, especially those relocating to the U.S. from other countries.
In fact, his desire to work with people on a more personal level was one of the reasons he got into real estate in the first place. Today, he deals with many clients from South Korea and China who are new to the West Coast and looking to invest in the market.
Studies and Law
After graduating from Brown University, Sang Min Lim attended law school at the University of Southern California (USC), where he turned his attention to using his talents to help others.
“While I was attending law school, I really started to focus on how the work I would do as a lawyer would make an impact on people’s lives,” Sang Min Lim said. “And thinking about that prompted me to also think about how I, as a lawyer, could work closely with my clients to make sure they had the best experience possible, and also that they felt like they were in good hands.”
Sang Min Lim’s law firm has a business law and real estate law department. Sang Min Lim built his law practice around the idea that the needs of his clients should be the highest priority.
He believes that his clients need to know without a doubt that their lawyers will always stay focused on their best interests, and fight with everything they have to get them everything they deserve.
“We never want to lose sight of that and always want to be understanding of how the legal matters we manage don’t just affect someone’s business, but their life and their family as well,” said Sang Min Lim. “As long as we stay focused on people, we do great work. It’s simple.”
Sang Min Lim built these same ideals into his real estate business and he believes these values are what sets him apart from his competitors.
“It isn’t just about knowing how to find a residential or commercial property. It’s about using online and traditional marketing platforms to find the right property, keeping client’s needs in mind, and making sure they’re comfortable with the process,” he said. “I often see real estate agents pushing through their own ideas of what a client might need. That’s not what we’re about.”
At the end of the day, for Sang Min Lim, his success is wrapped up in his ability to connect with his clients and honor their needs. His own success is proof of concept, and Sang Min Lim couldn’t be happier to be the role model for client-focused success.
“I think there’s a misconception that you have to be impersonal and all about business in order to succeed,” said Sang Min Lim. “I take this honor very seriously, and I take what I do very seriously.”
